    Last Sunday I was in Harvard Square to kill 45 minutes before meeting friends for lunch. So I did what any garden lover would do and headed to the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow House on historic Brattle Street for a leisurely stroll through the beautiful gardens (and a peek into the gift shop too!).

    At the store, I bought a copy of Longfellow’s famous poem, The Rainy Day. I know you’ve heard the poem’s most famous line – “Into every life must fall some rain”. “Hmmm,” I thought, “with what’s happening to our economy, the stock market, my 401(k), and some companies I know, I think I’m living in a tsunami!”

    There’s never been a better time to upgrade your sales team! Smart managers will capitalize on the chaotic business scene and seize the moment to hire some of the best talent around.

    Here are the steps you need to take to potentially find a rainmaker:

    1. Evaluate: Honestly (and confidentially) evaluate your current team. Knowing there are performers out there should give you that extra reassurance to look closely at the numbers. Decide how many and who can be replaced.
    2. Search: confidentially start the search process. Make sure your network, recruiters and everyone involved understand that your search is confidential at this point.
    3. Make your choices: Hire the top talent you need to get the numbers you want, based on the KPIs of your top performers and your ideal profile for your sales team!
    4. Make the cuts: First, meet with any sales teams who will be staying to reassure them of their value to the company. Then proceed to let your underperformers go. Ask your HR professional for help with this step if you need it.
    5. Solidify your team: One thing is certain: uncertainty will be with us for a while. It’s important to be confident that your new sales team is performing at the highest level. It is crucial that there are no “new” underperformers.
    6. Increase your sales training: If you think your team could benefit from some additional sales training, call your favorite sales trainer, consultant or sales guru and get put on the waiting list. These guys and gals will be very busy as savvy managers realize now is the time to ensure their sales team is performing at 110%. It ‘s short bucks for the return on that investment.

    All of this may not be quite as simple as “Click here to install these updates”, but I assure you that it is worth the time and effort. And that top performer you hire today can make all the difference between hitting your numbers or not!
